Dallas Accident Attorney News Report – Dallas, TX – A report released by the Governors Highway Safety Association showed that deaths of sixteen year old drivers and seventeen year old drivers were up a combined nineteen percent over the same period in 2011. Twenty-five states reported increases, seventeen states reported decreases, and eight states and the District of Columbia reported no change in the number of young driver deaths. (The report is based on preliminary state data, and it could change. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration should release more definitive data later this year.)

Some people believe the increase is due to distracted driving. Young drivers may be using handheld devices that take their attention away from the road. Advocates push for stronger teen driving laws. They point to the fact that deaths of young drivers dropped dramatically over the past decade when many states imposed greater restrictions on teen drivers, such as curfews and passenger limits. Over 400 sixteen year old drivers were killed in 2000. By 2011, just 173 sixteen year old drivers died. The long-term decline in teen driver deaths also coincided with a more gradual decline in traffic fatalities overall.
