Amy Witherite, a Dallas, Texas auto accident attorney, notes that a recent article identifies the Dallas-Fort Worth area as having a serious road rage problem. According to the article, young drivers in Dallas County and Tarrant County are the chief cause of this problem.

“Road rage” refers to an assault with a motor vehicle or a weapon during or after a car crash. According to the Texas Department of Transportation, between 2007 and 2011, road rage was cited as a contributing factor in more than 4,500 crashes. Approximately one-third of all drivers accused of road rage are in their twenties. Drivers typically exhibit road rage when road conditions are not favorable, such as when drivers try to merge onto a highway during rush hour. Drivers who drive aggressively also spark road rage.

State troopers and city police patrol highways to catch speeding drivers and tailgating drivers. Officers believe that these patrols can cut down on aggressive driving. In addition, drivers are urged to take steps to prevent becoming victims of road rage. Tips include:

Try not to respond if you are confronted by another driver.
Don’t retaliate. For example, if someone cuts you off, just move on.
Be aware of your surroundings and yield to others.
Allow yourself plenty of time to reach your destination.
Avoid freeways that you know will be bottlenecked.
